10 Picture-Perfect Family Photography Locations in San Luis Obispo County

Tips + Tricks

After photographing families in San Luis Obispo County for over 12 years, I’ve come to know this region like the back of my hand. I believe every session deserves care and intention, from choosing the perfect location to timing the light just right. Over the years, I’ve learned how the sun moves through each setting, which seasons bring out the best colors, and how to make the most of every backdrop.

Whether you’re dreaming of a session surrounded by nature, something stylish and urban, or a private orchard experience, here are 10 of my favorite photo session spots in San Luis Obispo County that consistently deliver beautiful results.

1. North County Countryside (Paso Robles, Templeton, Atascadero)

If you’re dreaming of wide open spaces and that classic Central Coast glow, the countryside in North County is pure magic. I have several favorite spots tucked away between Paso Robles, Templeton, and Atascadero—each offering a peaceful blend of rolling hills, sprawling oak trees, and golden light that wraps around you just before sunset. These locations are perfect for families who want a natural, relaxed backdrop that lets the connection between you shine. Whether we’re exploring a quiet dirt road or dancing in a sun-soaked field, the North County countryside never disappoints.

2. San Simeon Beach and Pier

Tucked into a quiet cove just off Highway 1, San Simeon Beach feels like stepping into a dream. Framed by towering eucalyptus trees and anchored by a charming wooden pier, this spot has an almost storybook feel. There’s often a soft marine layer drifting through the air, giving the whole place a misty, ethereal glow—especially in the early morning or late afternoon. It’s one of my favorite coastal locations for families who want something a little more magical than your typical beach session. The textures, the light, and the quiet hush of the waves create the perfect setting for timeless portraits.

3. Downtown Paso Robles

Downtown Paso Robles is far from quiet—it’s one of California’s busiest tourist hubs, drawing around 2.5 million visitors annually. That said, sunrise is a photographer’s paradise: before the tasting rooms open and the patios fill, the streets are soft with early light, free of crowds, and ideal for capturing intimate, colorful family portraits. The area’s brick storefronts, murals, tree‑lined avenues, and the historic Downtown City Park give just enough energy to feel urban—without losing that hometown warmth. For families wanting to celebrate their roots, this setting delivers portraits with both local character and timeless charm.

4. Downtown San Luis Obispo

For a session that blends city textures with natural beauty, nothing beats the top level of a Downtown SLO parking garage. It might sound unexpected, but this spot delivers clean lines, a modern urban feel, and—best of all—a breathtaking view of Bishop’s Peak glowing in the background at sunset. The mix of concrete, warm light, and that iconic ridgeline creates a striking visual contrast that still feels true to the Central Coast. It’s one of my favorite hidden-in-plain-sight gems for seniors, teens, and families who want something a little different than the typical nature backdrop.

5. Terrace Hill – San Luis Obispo

Terrace Hill offers some of the best panoramic views in San Luis Obispo—without having to hike too far. The short walk to the top is worth every step, opening up to wide open skies, sweeping views of the city, and a dramatic perspective of Bishop’s Peak and the surrounding hills. It’s a favorite of mine for families who want a session that feels expansive and grounded all at once. The golden grasses and soft breeze give the whole space a sense of calm, while the elevated setting brings in that cinematic Central Coast light we all love.

6. Bishop’s Peak – Highlands Trailhead

If you’re looking for a session that offers both sweeping mountain views and quiet, moody textures, the Highlands Trailhead at Bishop’s Peak delivers the best of both worlds. The trail begins with a grove of twisted oaks and dappled light—perfect for intimate, nature-rich portraits—before opening up to a wide view of the iconic peak. It’s an ideal location for families who want variety in their gallery, with both soft, earthy tones and bold, scenic backdrops all within a short walk. The golden hour light here is especially magical as it filters through the trees and glows against the mountain.

7. Avila Beach

Avila Beach has this laid-back, sun-soaked charm that makes it one of my favorite coastal spots to shoot. While the main beach is always lovely, my favorite place to photograph is down at the south end, especially when the tide is low. The walk leads us to a more tucked-away stretch framed by rock cliffs and soft neutral tones that photograph beautifully. It’s quieter, more private, and the earthy color palette of the cliffs and sea makes for a stunning backdrop—perfect for families who want something coastal, calming, and naturally beautiful.

8. Morro Rock & Dunes

Morro Rock is iconic, and it brings a dramatic, moody edge to your session—especially on those overcast or foggy days (which I secretly love). The beach is wide and open, perfect for running kids, big movement, and candid moments, all while that massive volcanic rock anchors the background. Whether we’re barefoot in the sand or tucked into the grassy dunes nearby, there’s a wild beauty here that adds a sense of scale and emotion to every frame.

9. Fair Hills Farm – Apple Orchard (Private Access)

Fair Hills Farm is something truly special—and one of the few locations I have exclusive access to. Nestled in the North County hills, this private apple orchard comes alive in the fall, with branches heavy with fruit and the scent of cider hanging in the air. It’s the kind of place that immediately feels nostalgic, like a memory unfolding in real time. Whether you’re walking between the rows, picking apples with your littles, or just soaking in the golden light, this setting is as magical as it is timeless. Available only on select dates each season.

10. Private Vineyard – Templeton

Tucked into the rolling hills of Templeton, this private vineyard is one of the oldest—and tallest—in San Luis Obispo County. Towering vines, rich textures, and panoramic views give this location a sense of history and elegance that’s hard to match. Whether we’re wandering through the rows at golden hour or capturing the soft morning light as it filters through the leaves, every corner of this property tells a story. Because I have exclusive access, you won’t have to share the space—just you, your family, and the timeless beauty of one of the most iconic vineyards in the area.
